Why you should never take a Weight Loss New Year resolution
Why you should never take a Weight Loss New Year Resolution
Written by Ajay Ameer founder of Wootu Nutrition
It is a social style statement to take resolutions at the beginning of every year not just in India but all over the world. Though there are aplenty, the most popular ones revolve around behavioural or life style changes like I’ll quit smoking from the New Year’s day or I will start reaching office at 9 AM from next year. These behavioural pledges are always the most difficult to follow. It requires more than just desire to make them a reality. It is even more challenging to stick with these resolutions if they are about weight reduction. Let us see why you should never take an oath to lose weight in the account of a New Year.
Gymming and weight loss

When it comes to a weight loss program, you are spoilt for choices. You might most likely start with Google as your first –level guide to know how to lose weight. As for Google, it always has more junk information than good ones especially when it comes to health care. Moreover, whatever you find would be tailored for the western world, their body composition and eating habits rather than yours. Sooner than later, you will figure this out on your own and as the next stop, you might go to your friend. Especially if your friend has just lost weight, he becomes your advisor and advises all that he did. But here is the catch, just because it worked for him, there is no guarantee that it will work for you. Now you are more disappointed and start looking around for your advertisements. Around the New Year time, there are these mushrooming gyms and fitness centers who offer big discounts to gobble up your weight loss resolution. Gymming and weight loss are no way related. Yes, you heard that right. Gymming can improve your cardio vascular fitness, balance, agility and proprioception but cannot help in losing the unwanted fat. Do you really think what you ate the previous day can be burnt in just 20 mins on the treadmill? One idly is 70 calories and all you can burn in a one hour workout is about 100 calories at best. By the time you get to this point, you have lost a couple of months at the gym already with no results. So your motivation is all but gone!
There is no auspicious time or date to start losing weight
Weight Loss or working towards that goal is a behavioural resolution. Like quitting smoking, weight loss is a difficult promise to keep because it demands persistence. Let’s go back and see what was the trigger that made you want to lose weight. One day, in front of the mirror, you see yourself and don’t like the shape you are in. You reminisce how fit you were not long ago. Now you want that back and decide to lose weight. This desire then becomes a resolution. For a couple of days, this resolution keeps nagging your attention. So you wonder what would be the ideal time to start and suddenly realise that it is almost the year end so you can always start from the New Year. Your resolution now becomes a New Year resolution. Look back.. The desire is not strong enough to make you start right away. The procrastinator inside you has made you push the start once and has no reason NOT to slow you down again in the New Year. The plan fizzles out naturally

The New Year does NOT give you magical powers to lose weight
New Year weight loss resolution is a myth. It’s a make-believe concept that has been floating around for a long time. If that hero can lose weight in 3 months for a movie, why not me? Naturally you think losing weight is a 3 month affair max-max. Now that’s another myth. If you plan to start your “making sacrifices” regimen in January expecting to be fit by March and stay that way for the rest of your life, you are in for a great disappointment. It is only a matter of time before you understand that it’s not sacrifices for 3 months that will keep you fit but wise decisions would. It is a round the year commitment to be mindful of what you eat which will in turn ensure how you look and feel.
To look fit and feel healthy, you should realise that eating right is the first and the only right way to go. Gymming, walking, cycling and swimming are secondary factors if not negligible. Waiting for a new year and choosing the wrong method to lose weight will fetch no results. Look for a good dietician who will design a custom made diet chart for you. That is the correct method; only working method rather; to lose weight.
The nutrition industry is so sophisticated these days that there are many types of diets available today. There are healthy diets that cut simple-carbohydrates from your menu and bring in quicker results like within 15 to 20 days. These are called paleo diets, with some further modifications are called ketogenic diets. For people who cannot survive without idly and curd rice, there are diet types that still bring about a good healthy weight loss in you. Choose one or let your dietician choose for you.
Without mincing more words, wasting more time, start dieting!!
